Today’s Simple Pleasure Treasure

Today’s pleasure treasure offered me a moment to feel valued; happening during a time when my value as a music teacher at my school is questionable. It’s a great feeling to know my students value the musical opportunities I work continually to offer them.

I teach music at a private catholic high school and freshman chorus has been a required class for many years.   I find that while many students are less than enthusiastic about taking the class at the start of school, by this point in the year their opinions have usually changed. I was reassured today that once again, this is the case.

My freshman shared with me today they were so glad they had to take freshman chorus because they’ve learned so much about music and in the process discovered they really like it!  Several shared that music isn’t a part of their home environments and they are so glad to have a chance to experience it at school and furthermore, learn something about how to make music.

What a great moment for a classroom music teacher.  To be told  I am instrumental in enriching and broadening students lives by providing them the opportunity to experience music first hand, brings me such joy.  It’s validation at it’s best and it comes from the best source:  my students.  Thank you kids for giving me a moment of joy!

Keep looking for your simple pleasure treasures and if your willing, share with me some of your discoveries.  I would love to hear and share with others  how taking notice of everyday pleasures improves lives.

Today’s Simple Pleasure Treasure

Sharing my own personal treasure hunt.

I was driving to work this morning, again in the cold, dark, and rainy world that has been southeast Indiana for the past several days.  I was running late too and feeling a bit anxious to be behind schedule.  Little did I realize there was surprise waiting for me that I would have missed if I had been on time.

I made a west bound turn and as I looked to my right to check for traffic, I was gifted with a burst of light as the sun came up over the horizon!  It was absolutely beautiful and such a wonderful surprise.  I can still see the breaking of day that seemed to happen just for me.  What a treasure.

How’s your treasure hunt coming along?

Begin the Journey…find the joy

Morning glory and babcopia blossoms bring me joy.

Look for the simple pleasure every day to bring joy and balance back into your life.

Every Monday I dread the commute to work because I have to pass a garbage truck on a hilly, curvy, and busy road when it’s dark outside.  It’s a horribly stressful moment until the truck is cleared safely.  Today even though it was rainy and windy the garbage truck was easy to pass with no stress.  It was a great way to begin a new week!  I’ll be back tomorrow with a new “joyous pleasure” to report.

Thanksgiving is for Everyone

My garden attracts hummingbirds and butterflys.

The pleasure in this was actually getting the photo before the hummingbird dashed away!

Happy Thanksgiving!

What a great holiday.  Thanksgiving doesn’t require regular feeding of the economy, except the grocery store of course.    It doesn’t require weeks of preparation shopping, wrapping, and hiding presents.  It doesn’t require attending a party every week to socialize with important figures in your network. It doesn’t require agonizing about what to wear.  It doesn’t involve controversial topics which can polarize.

Thanksgiving is about calling to mind those things to be thankful for.  Everyone can participate in this exercise no matter your religious preferences, political views, or financial circumstances.  In fact, if everyone did participate in this exercise on a regular basis the world would be a much different place I think.

Being thankful for aspects of our existence helps us come to peace with our lives.   Try taking a moment to reflect on everything that enriches your life and create a top 10 list.  If you expand the list to 50 or 100 items, you start to look for everyday events that bring joy to you.  Focusing our thoughts on what is good in our lives helps us gain perspective about what isn’t so good.  When I practice this exercise I always gain renewed appreciation for my life and its simple pleasures.

I hope your Thanksgiving reminded you of all the positive aspects of your life and redirects your perspective of the coming Christmas Holiday.  Maybe by New Year’s you will be making note of the top 1000 simple pleasures that enrich your life and carry those into the New Year with you.  Happy Counting!

Holiday Happiness!

Happy Holidays!

When my children were young and I was a stay-at-home mother, I couldn’t wait until the Holidays came around each year.  The thrill of deciding upon “just the right gift” for everyone, led to months of work making a variety of gifts.  Time spent making gifts was a labor of love and I looked forward to seeing the look in the eyes of the recipients as packages were unwrapped.  Decorating the house was something I did with the children because it brought all of us such joy displaying our favorite Christmas items.

For the past many years, the Holidays have been nothing more than a blur.  Being a music teacher means  preparing students for performances at Christmas concerts, Holiday Parades,  and other occasions sharing music with a variety of people.   Extra obligations, in addition to working long hours at school,  take up most of the personal preparation time required for my own holiday preparations.  Most every year I wait until December 22 to begin my preparations because  my work life is so invasive  of my home life.  I am in the process of rethinking the situation.

The first thing to consider is the necessity of sending Christmas Cards.  I am always late getting them out; usually after New Years.   I should only send cards to those that really know me so they won’t be offended when the card arrives late.  Home decorating is a whole other topic.  I could be content to have only  a tree and the family stockings on display.  I’ll have enough trouble keeping three cats out of the tree to forgo taking on any other home decorations.  Will my kids miss them? Doubt it!  If they do, they can come to visit and decorate to their heart’s content.  I’ll provide the hot cocoa and goodies while they provide the man power.

What about gift giving?  I think I know the gifts that will make my family happy, so that won’t be so difficult.   Home made pickles, jams, breads,  and cookies are always items  welcomed by everyone else, so I am set!  Wow, that makes life a lot easier.

I am resolved to  spend my Holiday this year with those I love.  I challenge you to find ways to “economize” your preparations so you  can carve out time to do what really matters to you.  Life is too short to spend Holidays working, being stressed, and feeling exhausted when you are suppose to be sharing the spirit of the season.  Try  minimizing the details and spend your time sharing the love.  It might just become the new “best” tradition.

Wishing you a relaxed and wonderful Holiday!

What’s Keeping You Inside?

Can't resist a picture of moss.

I love the delicate texture and colorful shade of moss. It's like finding a jewel amidst a sea of sand.

I  cannot believe in Southeast Indiana,  we are still enjoying sunny days, 60 degree temps, and blue skies  in November!  It’s hard for me to stay indoors on a day like today because I keep remembering what’s bound to come any day…..cold, wet, and dreary days.  I am an outdoor kind of person because nature keeps me moving, motivated, and happy.

Yesterday my husband and I got out-and-about in the company of our son, daughter, and son-in-law.  We visited Miami Whitewater Park; threw some frisbee, played on the playground, and meandered our way through a timberland hike.  Later we stopped by the Lawrenceburg Public Library to show our daughter what a wonderful and peaceful place it has become since the renovation years ago. The in-house coffee shop, fireplace, abundance of cozy chairs just waiting to be tried out, and the inviting staff all make for a wonderful outing for any book-lover.  In short, it was a glorious day, much like today and it was made even more wonderful sharing it with our children.

These "button" looking fungi caught my eye.

Life is too short to stay cooped up inside.  The abundance and splendor of Nature is God’s way of showing each of us how to refresh and rejuvenate, body and  soul.  Furthermore, being in the company of those you love nourishes your spirit.

Sharing our company is a wonderful thing, but Sharing food with those you love is even better in my family.  We love to eat and we love to share our recipes with each other.  We take pride when others find our dishes good and ask for seconds, or better yet, ask for the recipe. My family can shape an entire day around the joy of eating so it’s not a surprise  that I can’t wait until Thanksgiving rolls around every year!

I have an abundance of eggs because my hennies are working hard!  I found a really easy recipe for custard pie that anyone can prepare.  It tastes great with coffee and company! If you are a custard  perfectionist, you may find fault with the texture of this pie, but for quick and easy you can’t beat it.

This piece didn't last long enough to get the plate dirty.

Magic Crust Custard Pie, Robyn Witte.

1/4 cup butter/or margarine

4 eggs

3/4 c white sugar

1 pinch of salt

2 cups of 2% milk, (I use 1 cup of half-n-half and 1 cup of milk)

2 tsp vanilla extract

1/2 cup all purpose flour

Butter a 9 inch pie pan and set aside.  Put all ingredients in a blender and blend for 30 seconds.  Pour the mixture into the pie pan and grate some fresh nutmeg over the top.  Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.  The flour will settle to the bottom of the pan to make the crust.  Refrigerate.

Yum!

This pie is simple, easy, and delicious! PS. I love the Frank Lloyd Wright place mat we got at Falling Waters! It makes me happy to use things I love.

I can’t get enough Simple Pleasures that Life has to offer and I hope you feel the same way.

The blue sky offers a perfect backdrop to these colorful leaves.

Cleaning the Natural Way

Green Cleaning can be Fun!

I am a clean freak.  I admit it.  My  bathroom and kitchen need to be clean or I can’t stand to use them.  The rest of my house can be cluttered and dust ridden and I  tolerate that within reason.  But a dirty bathroom puts me over the edge.

I enjoy the empowerment of using natural products to clean my house. It’s not that I always avoided store-bought chemical cleaners.  I used my share of ammonia and bleach, and still do in certain situations.  But in general, I don’t keep chemical-laden manufactured cleaners in my home for regular use.  I  remember  years ago cleaning the oven; compelled to vacant the house briefly because the fumes irritated my lungs.  When using kitchen and bathroom cleaners I literally held my breath until I could wash them down the drain with the dirt they took with them.  My hands and face would burn as if sunburned when handling these products without gloves and then the talc from the gloves would start my hands itching as the final insult.

Children refocus our priorities.

After children graced our home, I locked the cleaners in a cabinet with a child-proof closure and prayed that my three older children never discovered the trick to unlocking them and bringing harm to themselves.  The household survived intact.  Then thirteen years ago my youngest son was born with Down Syndrome.  This event brought change and challenges that to this day, affect daily lifestyle.  It was imperative  to remove  cleaners that could cause harm because the life of our son depended on it.  I selected a product line called Melalueca because the company claims  the ingredients are natural, safe, and effective.  They work wonderfully, don’t make me flee the room because of fumes, and never irritate my hands.  And I feel secure knowing  my son has lived safely in the house using these cleaners.

I think this could have been me in a previous life…..

But I also have a pioneer spirit that tells me I can make cleaners on my own using natural ingredients and herbs that have served homemakers for hundreds of years.  They require more patience and elbow-grease in some instances, but they work just as effectively and at a great financial savings compared to store bought! And the best part is my son Ethan can help me in making and using these cleaners with no worries.

natural cleaning agent

Vinegar is a safe and effective all-purpose cleaner

My favorite items are white vinegar and baking soda.  These items clean almost everything.  I keep a pretty recycled olive oil bottle full of white vinegar and a 5 # bag of baking soda under my kitchen sink ready at hand to safely scour crusty baked-on pans, stained coffee and tea cups,  my stainless steel sink, and whatever else I find needs a cleaning boost. These products not only clean items, they clean drains.   Pour some baking soda down the drain, bring 2 cups of white vinegar to a boil, and pour down a slow drain.  Cover drain with a dish towel or jar lid opener  to contain the foaming action, wait a few minutes and run hot water for a few minutes.  Slow or clogged drains flush clear and fresh.  White vinegar run through the coffee maker once a month keeps the coffee tasting true and the maker working properly.  Hot white vinegar removes scale and mineral deposits effectively with a bit of a scrub and stubborn stains dissolve away with a dash of white vinegar.  1/2 cup of white vinegar added to the wash at rinse time makes a great fabric softener.

bowl of baking soda

Mix baking soda into a paste with water or essential oils and try it as a scratchless scrubbing powder.

Additional cleaning items are borax and washing soda (sodium carbonate).  Both of these items can be found in the laundry isle at your local grocery.  Borax is a natural mineral that cleans, deodorizes, disinfects, softens water, and repels cockroaches.  Washing soda is more caustic/alkaline (ph 11), as is borax, but its cleaning qualities work great for tough cleaning jobs.  Washing soda is frequently used as a wax remover or paint stripper so use caution when using these items because they can cause irritation.

These are the heavy hitters of natural cleaning agents.

For the aesthetic side of our personalities, add herbs and/or essential oils.  I only keep herbs in the house that are safe for consumption, but the essential oils I keep safely in a secure cabinet because taken internally could cause harm.  I typically don’t scent my cleaners because I don’t want my son to think they are food and eat them, but herbal or essential oils enhance cleaning efficacy and the aroma nurtures our spirits and makes cleaning a joy.

Thyme is a proven disinfectant and has it’s own distinctive scent.

A great bathroom disinfectant is made from thyme and borax.  You can use fresh thyme (about 5 sprigs) or 10 drops of thyme essential oil, 1/4 cup of borax, and 2 cups of hot water.  Bring water to boil and pour over the thyme sprigs in a bowl.  Let steep for 30 minutes then strain.  Add borax and dissolve in thyme solution.  If using essential oil, mix ingredients and shake well.

Pour into a spray bottle.  This solution is sprayed on bathroom surfaces and wiped clean with a damp cloth.  This solution also helps prevent mildew in the bathroom (this includes the shower curtain).

An herbal scouring powder recipe combines 1 cup baking soda, 1/4 c dried sage leaves, ground, 1/4 c rosemary leaves, crushed, and 1 tsp of cream of tartar.  Combine ingredients in a shaker top container.  Shake well.  Sprinkle a small amount of powder in the sink and scrub with a damp sponge or cloth.  Rinse well with clear water. Check out additional recipes for natural product cleaners as listed in Karyn Siegel-Maier’s book The Naturally Clean Home, 2008.

Cleaning can be enjoyable to accomplish when the cleaning products are safe, effective, and inexpensive.  If we make the products with our own hands; relish the scents released by our favorite essential oils; cleaning can actually become one of Life’s Simple Pleasures!

Oh, those horrible sick days…

Am I sick enough to stay home today?

Sick days are a part of everyone’s life unless you don’t have to report to work, or have a miraculous immune system.  I am a teacher and I must report to work five days a week from August until June. Additionally, I have children of my own, and not the strongest immune system.  Needless to say I am faced with the dilemma of dealing with the mad rush and terror of sick day mornings several times a year.  It’s an easy call if  your child is sick, because of course you need to stay home with a sick child.  I am lucky to have the luxury of being able to easily make the decision because I have a job that allows for such things.  My heart goes out to those that don’t have that option!

When I am ill that is a totally different situation.  I agonize over the decision to go to work or stay home and take care of myself.  I choose to go to school because sometimes it actually is in the best interest of students, but sometimes it’s because I don’t value my own needs enough to recognize what is in my best interest.  I need financial security and having financial security means being responsible at work and that includes good attendance.

Yet what about me? Good health is one of those things we take for granted until we learn otherwise that there are no guarantees about good health. We can make life choices that nurture good health.   Even then,  there are no guarantees!  I have lived long enough to realize that good health is paramount to living the life I want until I die.  I hope I haven’t done enough damage already by putting others needs before mine, to jepardize a healthy life from now on.  I must  be willing to make the decision to take care of myself, and pray that in doing so I don’t loose job security because of too many sick days.  I hope a balance can be reached in which the choices I make to nurture me, will result in an overall healthier life.

Maybe if sick days were more nurturing and less stressful I could give myself permission to choose my health over my job with less angst.  One such memory goes back to my teenage years.   An angel named Karen Walters came once a week and cleaned my Mom’s house.  She went about her business of cleaning the house one particular day when I was home from school ill, but not before she stopped by my bedroom to ask if I thought I could eat something.  I agreed reluctantly and went back to sleep.  Before she left that morning she prepared a special meal and brought it to me on one of Mom’s beautiful trays, using a beautiful bowl and tea cup.  Karen explained that her Mother used to make this dish for her when she was ill and she wished to share it with me.  It was a simple meal of toast and warm milk, with a touch of cinnamon and sugar.  A cup of hot tea helped sooth my sore throat and spiritless body.  I ate and relished the experience.  Karen’s loving nature, the beautiful tray and dishes, and of course the tasty toast left an indelible impression that day.  Now when I remember that period of illness it is with  fond memory and sweet sentiment.

My Mom cared for me when I was sick countless days and I don’t intend to slight her memory by recounting Karen’s story as a special memory; but it is important to acknowledge the fact that someone outside of the family, showing such a caring attitude struck me as special.

On those days when you or someone you love is under the weather, and you are home, take a moment to remember a time when others showed you tender loving care.  It won’t cure your illness but it will nurture your spirit and this alone can make the day better.

I wish for you this simple pleasure, in making those horrible sick days a little Happier!

Olive Oil’s Place in Beauty

nature's emollient

A beauty secret worth sharing: Olive Oil

Many in our society are beginning to realize that simplifying life is a goal worth reaching because we are over extended mentally, physically, and economically.  Combine this sentiment with eco-awareness, and we find a whole population of people looking for DIY  resources (do it yourself), and  natural, less processed or refined, and organic products/materials that directly affect our lives in a wide variety of ways; from home repair to beauty products.  My thirst to discover, experiment, and learn combined with a positive and creative nature, allowed me to explore whatever caught my interest.  I began by making natural beauty products as a teenager and it appears I never out grew out of that phase because today, many years later,  I make soap, lotion, body & lip balms, massage oils, bath salts and scrubs!  My next adventure will be making castor oil shampoo and shaving soap.

I discovered a long time ago that olive oil is a wonderful product to have in my home.  For health conscious folks this mono-saturated oil is ideal for healthy cooking and eating.  For the beauty conscious it has proven it’s worth over centuries of use by many and varied cultures.

I want to share with you an excerpt from “The Olive Oil Source” webpage discussing the benefits of olive oil in beauty.  There are some suggestions for skin and hair care included that I think you might find useful.  For your convenience, I added the link to my favorite links if you’d like to visit the site directly.

From The Olive Oil Source.com…… what many consumers don’t realize is something that people living millennia ago in ancient Greece took for granted; that extra virgin olive oil, all by itself, is one of the best beauty secrets. In addition to being a natural, hypoallergenic way to moisturize skin, extra virgin olive oil has the added advantage of providing strong antioxidants, like Vitamins A and E that help repair and renew skin that has been damaged from overexposure to sun, air pollution, and other modern-day environmental hazards – like cigarette smoke and fast food. These antioxidants have the natural ability to stimulate cells and return skin to a firmer, smoother, and healthier state.

To provide a slightly more scientific explanation, this damage is related to the destructive activity of oxygen-related free radicals produced by skin cells. Polyphenolic components of olive oil have been compared to traditional antioxidants, such as tocopherols, used by the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry to prevent skin damage. There are a number of simple and inexpensive ways to get the best skin care and beauty benefits out of a single bottle of extra virgin olive oil. The rich emollients in olive oil allow just a little to go a long way.

SKIN CARE AND OLIVE OIL

Skin Moisturizer
Whether applied to face or body, olive oil will penetrate deep into the skin and provide a long-lasting shield of moisture to keep skin smooth and supple. Used either as a night cream or daily moisturizer, it is best applied to damp skin, when water can help reduce any feeling of greasiness. We recommend using extra virgin olive oil.

Our readers have also suggested that a little lemon juice mixed with olive oil can provide a more bracing and refreshing feeling. In her best-selling book The Passionate Olive, Carol Firenze suggests making a moisturizer made of Italian parsley, water, and extra virgin olive oil.

Expect the natural benefits of olive oil to take a bit longer to be absorbed into the skin than most lightweight packaged skin products. But the advantages can be longer lasting too.

Exfoliator
If dry and scaly skin is a problem, Carol Firenze also suggests mixing olive oil and sea salt in a rub and massaging it into the affected area to slough off dead skin and enrich the healthy layer beneath it. Or add a few tablespoons of olive oil with a drop or two of lavender essential oil in a bath. This is a luxurious way to relax, soothe and moisturize the whole body.

Nail and Cuticle Care
Extra virgin olive oil makes the perfect, simple solution for dry nails and cuticles. Simply rub a few drops into the cuticle area and around the nail. Cuticles stay plump and moist, and nails respond with a natural shine.

Eye Makeup Remover
Just a drop or two of extra virgin olive oil on a cotton pad is all it takes to gently and effectively remove eye makeup without irritating the delicate skin around the eye area. The biggest added advantage is that when used consistently, olive oil can soften the skin around the eyes and smooth out wrinkles.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

HAIR CARE AND OLIVE OIL
When used on hair and scalp, olive oil can be considered two products: a deep conditioner and a dandruff controller. After shampooing, massage a mixture of equal amounts of olive oil and water into your hair. Leave on for 5 minutes, then shampoo and rinse. Your scalp will benefit from healthy conditioning; your hair will respond with more shine and strength.

Bringing Fall To You, Part Two

After I reviewed my photographic post of Fall in Indiana, I realized that not all the pictures were incorporated.  So today you get the second installment of my walk…… I am delighted that many of you  enjoyed my walk via pictures, and I am happy to share a few more!

A bright spot in the forest

A favorite scene in nature are sunbeams streaming through a woods. The light illuminates the beauty within.

Could it be a new home?

This woodpecker hole is amazing! The time it must have taken for that woodpecker to carve out a hole this size is a lesson in patience for us humans.

I love this vine!

The aroma of honeysuckle is intoxicating! It is sweet and heady but not over-powering. I am so drawn to its delicate scent. It always takes me to a peaceful place. I am drawn to stop and inhale its essence down deep into my lungs and my spirit.

The colors say it all!

I can almost put myself into this image as I gaze on the beautiful colors set off by the blue sky.

I wish for you many days of beauty and serenity.
