Every year people prepare for Christmas gift giving in their own way. Some like my father, wait until the last possible moment to go shopping, taking advantage of extreme sales. Others, storm retail stores on Black Friday like the barbarian horde; with intentions to purchase Christmas gifts, but usually end up buying for themselves. A rare few, make purchases throughout the year finding just the right gift for the people on their list, avoiding any rush at Christmas. Others like myself begin thinking about gifts in July, but don’t get really serious until after Thanksgiving. By then the rush is on and time is at a premium.
There are always things that people need or want that are best purchased from a store. Things like electronics, games, etc. But many gifts can be hand-made at home or purchased from folks that hand craft a wide assortment of things. I think these kinds of gifts are treasures because you know the person gifting them thought about you, your person, your character, your likes and dislikes, in order to make a selection.
I try to make the majority of the gifts I give. I make olive oil/ goat milk soap, shea butter lotion bars, lip balm, body mists, velvet ribbon book marks, up-cycled feed bag totes, rice bags to heat or cool and relieve sore muscles and cloth napkins to name a few. These items can be combined into a “comfort kit” that gift recipients will treasure on a daily basis, all the while being reminded of who gave them the gift.
